Transitions Global: Oregon
Today, right here in the United States, 300,000 American minor children are being trafficked for sexual exploitation. In Oregon, federal and local law enforcement believe they are encountering 3-5 girls per week who are victims of trafficking. Under the Federal Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA), any child under the age of 18 being sexually exploited is a victim of human trafficking and is entitled to appropriate services.
Transitions Global: Background
Transitions Global (TG) has been working with survivors of sexual trafficking in Cambodia’s capital city, Phnom Penh, since 2004. Transitions’ program works with 11-18 year old girls who are victims of forced prostitution, offering them a continuum of care including safe shelter, counseling, support, job training and placement.
Transitions Global has developed a high-quality, results-driven care model responding to the central issues facing minor victims of sex trafficking (MVST). This model includes both rehabilitation and reintegration, allowing these girls the opportunity to heal from the past while acquiring life, social and business skills. This model proved so successful in its pilot phase in 2006 that organizations globally have asked Transitions to replicate this program in their countries.
Transitions Shelter: Portland, OR
Right now, right here in Oregon there is a need to provide these girls with a secure and safe environment to begin the process of healing. Transitions Global is establishing a high-security protective shelter in Portland, Oregon to meet this need, utilizing a home-like environment for minor victims of sex trafficking. The highlights of this program will include:
Safe-shelter located in Portland on 4 plus acres (16-20 beds)
Counseling/Therapy (CBT-TF, DBT, EMDR, Yoga and Art Therapy)
Medical/Dental Care
Intensive Case Management
Adult Life Skills (PAYA Life Skills Program)
Educational Rehabilitation
Job Skills/Career Counseling
Job Placement/Re-entry Services
The success of this program is based on intensive and innovative care and casework to give girls the attention and services needed to overcome trauma, abuse, and exploitation and to emerge free and empowered to recapture hope and their dreams for the future.
