What We Mean

Victim Informed - Our program is built around the premise of restoring girls’ “voices and choices”. This is done by involving our girls in their own care from the moment of intake to their graduation from Transitions. As survivors, we want to give them opportunities to participate and engage in their own healing, whether they are choosing their clothes, decorating their room, deciding what kind of education they would like to pursue, or what they want to become in life – we give girls a say.

Evidence based - Evidence based usually refers to programs or practices that are proven to be successful through research methodology and have produced consistently positive patterns of results. While we exercise evidence based practices, our philosophy is to use “practice-based evidence”, meaning important information about ‘what works’ and best practices are located within the family, community, and individual. By providing a range of treatment approaches and supports that are derived from, and supportive of, the positive cultural attributes of the local society and traditions, we develop a model of care that works.

Social Work driven - Many shelter aftercare programs depend upon a therapy-driven model. While Transitions Global believes that therapy is important, we also believe that a holistic approach involves the individual, the family, the community, and society. In order to assist girls in becoming healthy and independent adults, we employ social workers as the driving force behind our program.

The success of this program is based on intensive and innovative care and casework to give girls the attention and services they need to overcome the trauma, abuse and exploitation they’ve experienced, and to emerge free and empowered to recapture hope and dreams for the future.

Why we work with girls - we are often asked why we choose to work with girls and why we don't work with boys? Well, the answer is really quite easy. Transitions Global seeks to meet the greatest need, which is girls. There has been a lot of discussion about the 'girl effect' - the idea that investing in girls today, will mean good things for society tomorrow. Today, there are more than 600 million girls in the developing world. In 2008, a study by Ruth Levine says that the total global population of girls ages 10-24 - already the largest in history - is expected to peak in the next decade.

Yet, at the same time, girls are the most vulnerable population, as evidenced by the number of girls being sexually trafficked globally. There is a severe lack of services to meet the number of girls that need them. Transitions Global seeks to provide these vital services and opportunities to girls around the world.
